I was just thinking about how I ended up attending SMU all the way from Hawaii, and I realized that it is pretty crazy that I’m here now.
Nobody from my family went to SMU, and nobody from my high school went to SMU. Before coming here, the only two people I knew in the state of Texas were my parents family friends. SMU wasn’t on my radar at all when I was applying to colleges.
What happened was that on a Saturday in January of my senior year of high school, I had nothing to do. I checked my email and saw that Southern Methodist University had extended my application deadline. I was fairly certain I was going to Villanova at that point, but I didn’t receive any scholarship money. So, I applied because I heard SMU had a good business school. A few months later, I was accepted to the school, and I received a larger scholarship than I did from any other school.
So, my parents researched the school a little and took me on a visit to Dallas to see the university. Even though I hated the visit and didn’t want to go to SMU, my parents decided to send me anyways, and now I’m here.
It’s strange to think that I’ve spent the past two years of my life at SMU in Dallas, TX because I had too much free time on a Saturday and made a last-second decision to apply to the school. It really makes me wonder about other tiny decisions and actions of mine that may have changed the course of my life.
